Boracay Freediving: Dive Deep Without a Tank

Boracay freediving is the art of diving beneath the surface on a single breath, with no scuba tank or heavy equipment. It is one of the most transformative water experiences available on the island, combining breath control, relaxation techniques, and underwater exploration into a deeply personal adventure. Whether you are a first timer curious about snorkeling beyond the shallows or an experienced diver training for depth records, Boracay offers professional freediving courses that take you from the basics to advanced certification. Courses are taught by certified Apnea Total instructors and range from introductory snorkeling sessions to multi week master programs that reach depths of 40 meters. All courses include hotel pickup, full diving gear, digital learning materials, and international certification upon completion. The warm, clear waters off Boracay provide ideal conditions for freediving year round, with visibility often exceeding 15 meters during the dry season from November through April. If you prefer diving with equipment, check out Boracay Scuba Diving for guided reef dives and PADI courses. For a simpler underwater experience, Boracay Helmet Diving lets you walk along the ocean floor with no training required.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Boracay freediving courses start at ₱3,500 per person for the introductory Level 1 Snorkeling or Level 2 Skin Diving sessions as of 2026. The Equalizing Clinic is also ₱3,500. For deeper training, the Static Apnea Clinic costs ₱7,500 for a full day. The 2 day Apnea Total Free Diver certification is ₱17,500, the 3 day Advanced course is ₱21,500, and the comprehensive 4 to 5 week Master program is ₱52,500. All prices include hotel pickup, full gear, digital learning materials, instructor, and certification.

Freediving is the practice of diving underwater on a single breath without using scuba tanks or breathing apparatus. Unlike snorkeling, which keeps you floating on the surface looking down, freediving teaches you to descend to depth using proper breathing techniques, equalization methods, and body positioning. In Boracay, freediving courses start with surface level snorkeling skills and progress to skin diving, static breath holds, and eventually deep water dives reaching 10 to 40 meters depending on the course level.

If you have never freedived before, the Level 1 Snorkeling or Level 2 Skin Diving courses at ₱3,500 each are the best starting point. These half day sessions introduce you to basic water comfort, breathing, and shallow diving techniques with no prior experience required. If you want a proper certification, the 2 day Apnea Total Free Diver course at ₱17,500 is the first internationally recognized certification level, covering classroom theory plus open water dives up to 10 meters on Day 1 and 20 meters on Day 2.

Yes. Freediving in Boracay is taught by certified Apnea Total instructors who follow strict international safety protocols. Every session starts with a thorough briefing on breathing, equalization, and safety procedures. Your instructor is in the water with you at all times and monitors your depth, technique, and comfort level throughout the dive. Beginners start with shallow depths and only progress as their skills develop. Full diving gear including a freediving lanyard is provided for all participants.

The depth you reach depends on your course level and skill progression. During the 2 day Free Diver course, Day 1 covers depths up to 10 meters and Day 2 reaches up to 20 meters. The 3 day Advanced course progresses to 30 meters. The comprehensive Master program, which runs 4 to 5 weeks, trains you to dive up to 40 meters on a single breath. Introductory snorkeling and skin diving sessions focus on surface and shallow water skills before any depth work begins.

Yes. The Boracay freediving courses that offer international certification are the Apnea Total Free Diver (2 days, ₱17,500), Apnea Total Advanced (3 days, ₱21,500), and Apnea Total Master (4 to 5 weeks, ₱52,500). Upon completing the required classroom theory and open water assessments, you receive an Apnea Total certification card that is recognized worldwide. The introductory Level 1, Level 2, and clinic sessions are standalone experiences and do not include certification.

It depends on your goals and comfort level. Freediving uses no tanks, focuses on breath control and personal depth achievement, and creates a more meditative underwater experience. It starts at ₱3,500 for an introductory session. Scuba diving uses air tanks that let you breathe underwater for 30 to 60 minutes at a time, which is ideal for exploring coral reefs and marine life at a relaxed pace. Choose freediving if you want to develop a personal skill and explore depth on your own breath. Choose scuba if you want longer bottom time and guided reef exploration.

The best time for freediving in Boracay is during the Amihan (dry) season from November through April when seas are calm, visibility is excellent (often exceeding 15 meters), and weather conditions are consistently clear. Freediving courses run year round, but the wet season from June through October can bring rougher seas and reduced visibility on certain days. If you are booking a multi day course such as the 2 day Free Diver or 3 day Advanced, the dry season gives you the most reliable conditions for completing all open water sessions on schedule.
